Player Stories: What Real Pokies Bet Logs Show
Most writing about online pokies is either marketing or theory. This series is neither. Each story takes one player's full bet log, hundreds of thousands of rows with a timestamp, a game, a stake, a payout and a balance, and follows what actually happened to the money: the wins that made the account six figures, the sessions that took it back to zero, the pattern in the bet sizes that nobody chose on purpose. The players are not named and cannot be identified from what we publish. The numbers are not rounded to make a point.
Stories so far
- A$70 on Gold Power Express — 156,168 bets over fourteen months. One A$70 spin paid A$144,550; the account finished at fourteen cents. Turnover A$7.7 million, net result −A$92,027. Charts of the record day and the worst day, hour by hour.
- Three days on top — 853,447 bets over four and a half years. Twice within ten days in May 2024 the balance passed A$100,000, and twice it went to zero. Total result −A$1.2 million. Includes the bet-size pattern: the bigger the balance, the bigger the bet.

Where the data comes from
Each story starts from a CSV export of a single account's betting history, the same table an operator keeps for its own accounting: one row per spin, with the time, the game, the stake, the payout and the balance after the round. The exports were provided to us with the account holder's consent, on the condition that the player is not identified. Before analysis we remove everything that could identify a person: account numbers, usernames, e-mail addresses, IP addresses, device details and the operator's internal IDs. What remains is the spin-level record and nothing else.
The aggregates behind every chart are downloadable as CSV from each story (marked as Download the data), under a CC BY 4.0 licence with attribution to toponlinecasinoaustralia.com. We do not publish raw rows. The charts and tables on each page are aggregates: results by day or by month, balance by the hour, the share of bets at each size, the net result by game.
How the numbers are calculated
- Player result = payouts − stakes, over any period. A negative number is money the player lost to the games; it is the operator's gross win from that account.
- Turnover is the sum of all stakes. It is much larger than the money deposited, because winnings are re-bet many times.
- Deposits and withdrawals are not in a bet log. We reconstruct them from gaps between the balance after one spin and the balance before the next: a jump up is a deposit or bonus, a drop is a withdrawal. These are estimates and are labelled as such.
- Time stamps are taken as exported. The time zone is usually the operator's, not the player's, so times of day are approximate.
- Cancelled rounds (a stake refunded with no result) are excluded from bet counts and results.
What we do not do
We do not describe a player's emotions, motives, finances outside the account, or anything else the table cannot show. We do not present any pattern in the data as a strategy: every story in this series ends with less money than it started with, and the big wins in them arrived on the same bets, in the same games, at the same rhythm as the thousands of spins that paid nothing. We do not identify the operator when doing so could identify the player.
