Casino Hold’em is Texas Hold’em with the dealer as the only opponent: two hole cards each, five community cards, one decision. Played with the standard pay table and a sound raising strategy it costs 2.16% of the ante, which puts it beside blackjack without basic strategy and well ahead of most side bets and all pokies. Two things make the online version worth reading about before playing. Realtime Gaming’s copy, called Caribbean Hold’em and carried by the Fair Go and Lucky Tiger families, pays even money on the ante when the dealer fails to qualify instead of the full bonus table, a change its rules do not disclose. And the live-dealer version, Evolution’s Casino Hold’em, is what the Novatrix brands and the Wolf Winner family actually list. The rules
- The player places an Ante; an optional AA side bet may be placed at the same time.
- The player and the dealer each receive two cards face down; three community cards are dealt face up.
- The player either folds, losing the Ante, or calls by placing a Call bet of exactly twice the Ante.
- Two more community cards are dealt and the dealer’s hand is turned over. Each side makes its best five-card poker hand from seven cards.
- The dealer needs a pair of fours or better to qualify. If the dealer does not qualify, the Ante is paid by the Ante pay table and the Call bet pushes. If the dealer qualifies and the player’s hand is better, the Ante is paid by the table and the Call pays 1 to 1. If the dealer qualifies and wins, both bets are lost. A tie pushes both.
The Ante pay table, on the most common version: royal flush 100 to 1, straight flush 20 to 1, four of a kind 10 to 1, full house 3 to 1, flush 2 to 1, everything else 1 to 1. The AA bonus pays on the player’s two cards plus the three-card flop: a pair of aces or better, from 7 to 1 for aces up to 100 to 1 for a royal flush, regardless of the main hand’s result.
The house edge and the pay table
With the standard Ante table and optimal play the house edge is 2.16% of the Ante. Because the average player has 2.16 units at risk once the Call is counted, the cost per unit wagered, the “element of risk”, is about 1%: for a A$10 ante and A$20 call the expected loss on a hand is about 22 cents. Pay tables vary by software, chiefly in the flush and full-house pays; the difference between the best and worst common tables is under half a percent of the ante. The AA side bet is a different proposition: at the usual pays its edge is around 6%, and on some tables higher. It is an entertainment bet, not part of the game’s value.
When to fold
The optimal strategy raises 82% of hands and folds 18%; there is no compact rule set, but the folds are the hands with two low, unpaired, unsuited hole cards that miss the flop entirely, with no pair, no flush draw and no open straight draw. Everything else, including any pair (even one made with the board), any flush draw, any open-ended straight draw and any ace or king high with a matching board card, is a call. The common mistake is folding too much: because the dealer fails to qualify about a quarter of the time and then pays the Ante for nothing, calling with a weak hand is usually cheaper than it looks. Folding 30% of hands instead of 18% roughly doubles the house edge.
Caribbean Hold’em: the RTG version
Realtime Gaming, the studio behind Fair Go, Ozwin, PlayCroco, Lucky Tiger, Rich Palms and Shazam, has a game called Caribbean Hold’em that follows the rules above with one change: when the dealer does not qualify, the Ante pays 1 to 1 instead of the Ante pay table. The Wizard of Odds notes that this rule “is nowhere disclosed in their game rules”. The effect is to remove the premium pays exactly when a strong hand is most likely to be paid by them, and to raise the house edge above the 2.16% of the standard game.
