Pokies Apps in Australia: Store Apps vs What Casinos Install

Updated 18 October 2026 · 9 min read · 18+ · How this site is funded

Each of the seven App Store and Google Play pokies apps we opened from Australia on 17 October 2026 says it offers no real-money wins, and on the 30 online casino sites we checked that day we found no link to either store: a casino “app” is a home-screen shortcut to the website, at one casino an Android file, or nothing.

Pokies apps in the App Store and Google Play

The seven store pokies apps we opened are social casino games: each has an in-app purchases line, and each says it does not offer real-money wins. Five are the store listings in Ahrefs’ latest Australian results for “pokies app” (results of 19 September 2026, an estimate); we added the App Store pages of Cashman and Big Fish. We opened all seven from an Australian connection on 17 October 2026.

Listings opened from an Australian connection on 17 October 2026. Price and age cells are copied from each listing as shown; Google Play shows no “Free” price line.

By the listings’ own words, you can spend money in these apps but cannot win any: every listing carries an in-app purchases line, and every disclaimer rules out winning real money or prizes. Product Madness is named on six of the seven listings. The Lightning Link App Store listing calls the app “the legendary social casino game from Aristocrat”. Where Aristocrat’s games run with virtual coins and where for real money is covered in our guide to Aristocrat pokies online.

To try a pokie without paying, our guide to free pokies in demo mode lists the casino lobbies where the demo started without an account.

Why store rules leave out real-money pokies apps in Australia

Apple requires real-money gaming apps to be licensed where they are used, Google Play’s Australia row lists only sports betting and lotteries, and ACMA lists online “slots (pokies)” among illegal online services.

Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines, last updated 16 October 2026, say in rule 5.3.4: “Apps that offer real money gaming (such as sports betting, poker, casino games, horse racing) or lotteries must have necessary licensing and permissions in the locations where the app is used, must be geo-restricted to those locations, and must be free on the App Store.” Rule 5.3.3 bars in-app purchase of credit for real-money gaming. Neither rule names a country.

Google Play “generally prohibits apps from facilitating real-money gambling and gaming”, with an exception for apps that are “licensed and approved by Google”. For other apps the ban “includes but is not limited to, online casinos”. In Google’s country table, the Australia row lists only “Sports betting (including daily fantasy sports where legal)” and “Lotteries”.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) lists “slots (pokies)” and “casino-style games (like poker, blackjack and roulette)” among illegal online services. It says of them: “You might be able to access them, but they will not give you the same customer protection as a licensed service.” ACMA also says the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 “makes it illegal for gambling providers to offer some online services to people in Australia”, with online casinos first on its list. Our guide to what Australian law says about online casinos covers the detail.

Real-money pokies apps: what the casino “app” button installs

At online casinos the “app” is the website itself: a shortcut on the home screen, a browser page or nothing. Of the 30 casinos we checked on 17 October 2026, one offered an Android app file, and we found no link to the App Store or Google Play on any of the 30 sites in three passes.

Two terms explain the table. A PWA (progressive web app) is a website the browser can save as an icon and open in its own window. A manifest is a file in the site’s code that tells the browser the site can be installed that way.

Of the 30 casinos, 13 named an install route on screen: 12 a home-screen or PWA route, one an Android file. Eight had a manifest but showed no install offer, seven offered the browser only, one claimed an app we could not find, and one was closed to Australia.

The table keeps the 19 casinos that showed no banner asking visitors to confirm they are outside Australia. It gives no install steps and no links to the casinos. In it, seven name a home-screen route on screen, four have a manifest with no offer seen, seven are browser only (Casino Mate’s site code also has a manifest) and one is a claim we could not trace.

Listed alphabetically; not a ranking. Observed from an Australian connection on 17 October 2026, three passes; all passes agree. ACMA’s list is its blocked-domain data feed of 1,810 domains, read the same day. Ten more casinos we review showed the outside-Australia banner and one was closed to Australia; they are named in How we checked.

Where the app claim and the site disagree

At four casinos in the table, what the page says about an app and what we found on the site or in its code do not line up.

  • Grand Rush. Its home page says “Or grab our iOS or Android app for the full experience”; in three passes we found no app page, app file or store link.
  • King Johnnie. Its mobile page says it works “without needing an app”, yet the site code has a manifest, and the home-screen wording sits only in the code.
  • Casino Mate. Its mobile page says “No download necessary!”, while the site code has a manifest.
  • Lucky Dreams. The site’s own page list includes a page named PWA Landing, but its address sends a guest to the login page.

PWA, APK or browser: what changes for you

A PWA and the browser open the same casino website; an APK is a separate program that Android will not install from outside Google Play until you allow it.

A PWA opens the casino’s own website in its own window, from an icon on the home screen. An APK is an Android app file. One of the 30 casinos, one that shows the outside-Australia banner, offered one for download; on 17 October 2026 its link answered as an Android app package.

Android’s developer documentation, last updated 26 February 2026, says: “Android blocks such installs until the user opts into allowing the installation of apps from other sources.” On Android 8.0 and later this is a system settings screen called Install unknown apps.

Which RTP build a casino runs is a separate question from how you open it; our guide to best paying online pokies explains why studios ship several builds of one game. How browser play, home-screen shortcuts and app files compare in general is on our page on playing in the browser versus an app.

iPhone and Android

On both systems the casinos in our table offer the same website, and we found no App Store or Google Play link on any of them.

Real money pokies app on iPhone

The App Store pokies apps we opened are social games (see the first table), and Apple’s rule 5.3.4 requires real-money apps to be licensed where they are used. On our iPhone-profile pass, Bizzo, HellSpin and National showed a menu item “Download our app!”; their sites carry a PWA manifest. That pass used a Chromium browser set to an iPhone profile, not Safari itself, so what Safari shows was not observed.

Android

Google Play’s Australia row allows only sports betting and lotteries (see store rules). Outside the store, the one Android app file we found was at a casino we leave out of the table.

Pokies apps FAQ

What is the best real money pokies app in Australia?

We cannot name one: Google Play’s Australia row allows only sports betting and lotteries, and Apple requires real-money apps to be licensed where they are used. The seven store pokies apps we opened are social games with no real-money wins. At online casinos the “app” is a home-screen shortcut, a browser page or nothing, as the table above shows.

Are pokies apps real money?

The seven store pokies apps we opened are not: each lists in-app purchases, and each says it does not offer real-money wins. Online casinos take real money through their websites, and their “app” is a shortcut to that website or nothing.

Is there a pokies app on iPhone?

The pokies apps we opened in the Australian App Store are social games with no real-money wins. Casino sites offer a home-screen shortcut at most. Our iPhone check used a Chromium browser with an iPhone profile, so what Safari shows was not observed.

Do free pokies apps pay out?

Not in real money. The Lightning Link listing in the App Store says “This game does not offer gambling or an opportunity to win real money or prizes.” Demo play at casinos is covered in our guide to free pokies.

Is it safe to install a casino APK?

Android’s developer documentation says: “Android blocks such installs until the user opts into allowing the installation of apps from other sources.” The one casino APK we found was at a casino that shows the outside-Australia banner, and we leave it out of our table.

Sources and method

How we checked. On 17 October 2026 we opened 30 casinos we review from an Australian connection (Melbourne), in three passes: twice with an Android phone profile and once with an iPhone profile in a Chromium browser. On each we read the home page and the casino’s own app or mobile page, read the manifest from the site code and noted any banner asking visitors to confirm they are outside Australia. Home addresses were checked against ACMA’s blocked-domain data feed (1,810 domains, read the same day). Left out of the table: PlayAmo, Woo Casino, Golden Crown, Casinonic, RocketPlay, King Billy, Ricky Casino, Spinago, Dundee Slots and Queen Spins (outside-Australia banner), and Kings Chance (“not available in your country” in all three passes).
