Key facts
- Made by Aristocrat Technologies Australia. The ACT approved it on 13 February 2008, and a version it lists as Gen7 Viridian on 9 September 2008.
- The ACT approval gives a 1c base credit and a maximum bet of $8.40.
- We found no published RTP for Lucky 88. The ACT approved its variations at return ranges between 86.04% and 92.98%.
- Free play: Heart of Vegas names Lucky 88 in its Google Play Australia description (virtual coins, 18+); we did not open the app’s lobby (17 October 2026).
- Real money online: our Aristocrat guide explains why a real-money “Aristocrat” pokie at an offshore casino is not an Aristocrat product (Aristocrat games online). None of the 12 offshore lobbies we search lists a game of that name (17 October 2026).
What Lucky 88 is
Lucky 88 is a spinning-reels pokie machine by Aristocrat Technologies Australia, approved by the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission on 13 February 2008. That approval gives a 1c base credit and a maximum bet of $8.40. A second ACT approval, on 9 September 2008, covers a version the ACT lists as Gen7 Viridian, with the same base credit, maximum bet and return ranges.
The earliest record we found is the ACT approval of February 2008, so we do not print a release year. Lucky 88 also appears three times in New Zealand’s casino approvals list as at 3 July 2017:
| Version | What the record gives | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Lucky 88 | Aristocrat, spinning reels, 1c base credit, maximum bet $8.40, three return ranges by variation | ACT Gaming Machine Approval 2008 (No 2), 13 February 2008 |
| Lucky 88, Gen7 Viridian | Same base credit, maximum bet and return ranges | ACT Gaming Machine Approval 2008 (No 19), 9 September 2008 |
| LUCKY 88 and LUCKY 88 480 / 840 CREDITS | Two entries in New Zealand’s casino approvals list; the list gives only the name, an approval number and the maker | NZ Department of Internal Affairs, casino approvals up to 3 July 2017 |
| Lucky 88 - Extra Choice | One entry in the same list; no description | Same list |
Lucky 888 is a different game: it has its own page on Aristocrat’s US website.
Features: what is documented
We found no description of Lucky 88’s features from Aristocrat, and the ACT and New Zealand records list no features.
One trade note describes them. Casino Enterprise Management’s “New Class III Slots, December 2008” calls Lucky 88 a 25-line game with a 5-credit ante bet, in 1-cent denomination. With “PowerPay”, it says, the player chooses one of four free game and multiplier options or a “dice game”; without the PowerPay ante bet, one of three free games with multiplier options. The note says the feature is won on three or more “lantern” symbols, or randomly, and can be won again during the free games. We found no Aristocrat document with these details, and the note does not say whether machines approved in Australia have them.
RTP: approved ranges, not one figure
We found no published RTP for Lucky 88; what is on record is the return range the ACT approved for each variation of the machine in 2008.
| Machine variation | Approved return to player (min–max) |
|---|---|
| 99 | 87.01–92.01% |
| 01 | 87.98–92.98% |
| 02 | 86.04–91.04%, only on a link jackpot arrangement where machine and link together return at least 87% |
From ACT Gaming Machine Approvals 2008 (No 2) and (No 19). Each machine variation has its own approved range.
Which setting a given machine uses today is not published in the sources we found (17 October 2026). A 90% return is an average over a very long run of play — 90 credits for every 100 bet; it says nothing about one session. State minimums for venue machines are in our Aristocrat guide.
Free play: what exists
The one free option we could document is Heart of Vegas, a social casino app “From Product Madness at Aristocrat Australia”. Its Google Play Australia description says: “Plus, explore 50 Lions, Lucky 88, 50 Dragons, Big Red…”. The same description says the app is for adults (18+) and “does not offer real money gambling or an opportunity to win real money or cash prizes”.
The App Store Australia description of Heart of Vegas does not name Lucky 88, and neither do the store descriptions Cashman Casino and Lightning Link Casino give for themselves. We did not open the lobby inside the app, so which version it carries is not confirmed (17 October 2026). Another Aristocrat title in the same app is covered on our Queen of the Nile page.

Where the real game is playable
Lucky 88 is documented as a venue machine — ACT approvals in 2008, and New Zealand’s casino approvals list as at 3 July 2017 — and we found no current public list of machines and no regulated online version (17 October 2026).
| Way | What we found | Source, date |
|---|---|---|
| Australian venues | Approved in the ACT in February and September 2008; no current public list of machines in our sources | ACT approvals 2008 (No 2) and (No 19); searched 17 October 2026 |
| New Zealand casinos | Three Lucky 88 entries in the casino approvals list as at 3 July 2017 | NZ Department of Internal Affairs list (archived 29 January 2018) |
| Aristocrat’s current website | No page for Lucky 88 | Aristocrat Gaming site index, 17 October 2026 |
| Heart of Vegas app (virtual coins) | Named in the Google Play Australia description; not in the App Store Australia description; lobby not opened | Google Play and App Store (Australia), 17 October 2026 |
| Regulated US online casinos (six indexes we could read) | Not in the game-rules indexes Aristocrat Interactive publishes for Borgata, Caesars, DraftKings, ESPN Bet, FanDuel and Golden Nugget | Aristocrat Interactive game help, 17 October 2026 |
| Offshore casinos accepting Australians | 0 of the 12 lobbies we search list a game called Lucky 88 | Lobby search from an Australian IP, 17 October 2026 |
The 12 lobbies are the ones our free pokies guide uses for title checks; they are offshore, not licensed in Australia, and we do not recommend them. Online for real money, no provider may offer it to you in Australia: ACMA says the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it illegal for gambling providers to offer some online services to people in Australia, online casinos among them. Details are in our guide to the law.
How to tell a copy
A label is not proof. On 12 October 2026 we saw a tile called Lucky 88 labelled Aristocrat in two other offshore lobbies that accept Australians; our Aristocrat guide explains why such a game is not an Aristocrat product.
Our guide calls the studio name in the info panel the definitive test (signs of a copy). An RTP above 92.98% is outside every range the ACT approved in 2008 — a reason to check, not proof. And mind the name: Lucky 888 is another Aristocrat game, and a casino called Lucky 88 is not the game.
