Live Blackjack in Australia: Is It Allowed, Is the Dealer Real and How Do You Pick a Table?

Last checked 6 November 2026 · 18+ · How this site is funded

Can you play live blackjack from Australia, and what happens to your money if the site doesn’t pay?

The Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (IGA) puts the offence on the provider. Section 15(1) says: “A person commits an offence if: (a) the person intentionally provides a prohibited interactive gambling service; and (b) the service has an Australian-customer link”, which means a customer in Australia. ACMA explains that the Act “makes it illegal for gambling providers to offer some online services to people in Australia”, and its list of banned services includes “online casinos”. On its page for players, ACMA says “Illegal online services include” “casino-style games (like poker, blackjack and roulette)”, and adds: “You might be able to access them, but they will not give you the same customer protection as a licensed service.” ACMA names the game, not the live format; that live blackjack falls under it is our reading. In practice, the live blackjack tables you can open online are offered by sites based overseas.

Is playing an offence for you? We found no offence aimed at the player in the federal Act, including the version that applies from 1 January 2027, and a 2011 federal review paper and the Department responsible for the Act say the same. That is our reading of the federal Act, not legal advice, and we did not check state and territory laws; more on our is online gambling legal in Australia page.

What happens to your money. This is the practical risk. ACMA says: “If you use an illegal service, Australian regulators will not be able to help you if:” … “the service provider withholds your winnings”, and “Unfortunately, you are unlikely to see your money again in these situations.” If you have problems recovering money from an overseas gambling website, ACMA lists three options: “seek independent legal advice”, “complain to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission” and “contact the relevant licensing authority”. ACMA does not say these steps will get the money back, so treat any deposit at such a site as money you may not recover.

Blocking. ACMA also warns: “There is also a risk that these websites will be blocked. This means you may not be able to log in and access your existing account.” On 5 November 2026 ACMA’s list of blocked gambling websites held 1,810 addresses, and 7 of the 10 casino addresses we checked on 6 November were on it: 6 of the nine lobbies in the short answer, plus BitStarz (marked in the casino table). An address that is not on the list is not approved by ACMA; it simply has not been blocked.

What changes in 2027. ACMA says “Most of the reforms commence on 1 January 2027.” From that date banks and payment providers “must prevent, so far as it is reasonably practicable to do so, a payment from being made, or funds transferred” to an illegal gambling provider. The text does not tell us what will happen to withdrawals to players, so we make no claim about them. A chart of what ACMA lists as banned and what is regulated here is on our live casino page.

Is the dealer real? Is it rigged, and how do you check a table?

Live tables are run by studios: companies that film the game and supply the same tables to many casinos. In the lobby data we read, every game carried the name of its studio, and the lobbies kept a list of their providers (studios); we did not open the game tiles themselves. What a live game has to do is set out in GLI-19, a testing laboratory’s standard for online gaming systems. It covers “live games conducted by a gaming attendant (e.g., dealer, croupier, etc.)”, where “The entire process is viewed by all players through real-time remote audio and video feed”. It also says: “Where a discrepancy between the physical randomness device and the game outcome data exists, the physical randomness device’s outcome shall be considered correct.” At a blackjack table the physical device is the cards, so what you see dealt is what counts, not what the software records.

The standard also requires the platform to tell you what happens when the data flow, video or voice drops and how dealer errors are settled, and it must not give players real-time information for tracking the cards played and the cards remaining. On tables streamed from a casino floor, where people also play in person, “Players who are playing through a Gaming Platform shall be no more or no less eligible to win the game than in-person players.” That last rule covers only such tables, not studio tables without a floor.

These are the standard’s requirements, not a test of the tables in our lobbies: we did not check which studios’ tables were certified against it. One format is an exception to the rule that every card is real: Evolution said in 2018 that in its Infinite Blackjack players get “a mix of physical and virtual cards being dealt in real time by a professional live dealer”. Evolution was not in the provider lists of the nine lobbies we opened from Australia (see the casino table), so you are unlikely to meet that format there. A live dealer is not proof that a site is fair: the bigger risk is the operator, as the law section explains. What you can check yourself:

  1. The studio that makes the game. A “Live” tab does not prove a live dealer, so find out which studio makes a game before you join it. We read the studio from the lobby data, without opening the tiles, so we cannot say where your lobby shows it. On 6 November 2026 the live sections of Dundee Slots and Queen Spins also held 32 and 31 blackjack games from studios that make computer games, such as “Speed Blackjack Pro” and “Multihand Blackjack” by BGaming and “American Blackjack” by Betsoft. We judged them computer games by the studio name; we did not open them.
  2. The rules panel. It should say what happens to your bet if the stream or your connection drops and how errors are settled, and it shows the rules that set the house edge (see the rules below).
  3. The studio’s licence. We did not check the studios’ licences. The footer of Imagine Live’s site, for example, says that Digitain (MT) Limited “is licensed and regulated by the Malta Gaming Authority”; we did not look that up in the Malta register. If it matters to you, look up the game’s studio before you play.

How does a round of live blackjack work on screen?

The rules of blackjack are the same as at any table (they are on our blackjack guide). What is new online is how you join and act:

  1. Pick a table. Ricky Casino, Casinonic and Dundee Slots write in their terms that “There are min and max bet limits indicated on the game icons of live dealer games.” We could not see the tiles or those limits without an account.
  2. Take a seat, or bet behind. A classic table has a fixed number of seats; Evolution described traditional tables as having “only seven seats”. If every seat is taken, some studios let you bet on a seated player’s hand instead (Bet Behind; see the table below).
  3. Place your bet before the deal. We found no published figure for how long the betting time lasts, so have your stake ready before you sit down.
  4. Make your decision on screen: hit, stand, double or split. Imagine Live, for example, says that at its tables “Players can double their bet after splitting”.
  5. The dealer finishes the hand and the platform pays. On a A$10 bet, a blackjack paid at 3:2 wins A$15; at 6:5 it wins A$12. That payout line is the first thing to look for on the rules panel.

Bet Behind and the shared hand are not the same as your own seat: with Bet Behind you ride on someone else’s play, and on a shared hand you play the same cards as everyone else. A table called “Limitless Blackjack” (Vivo Gaming) was listed at Woo Casino, PlayAmo and CasinoChan; whether it plays like Infinite Blackjack we did not check.

Which live blackjack tables are there, and which rules make a table more expensive?

The house edge is the casino’s average share of every bet over a long run. At blackjack it is set by the table’s rules, and the figures below assume you play basic strategy, the mathematically best move for every hand; a player who guesses loses more. Soft 17 is a hand of 17 that counts an ace as 11: a table where the dealer hits it costs you more than one where the dealer stands. The figures are Wizard of Odds estimates, which we have not verified ourselves.

Blackjack rules and what they do to the house edge
Rule set or betCasino’s average share of each bet (estimate, basic strategy)What to look for on the rules panel

Side bet Perfect Pairs (pay table A, 8 decks)4.10%The side bet’s pay table
Side bet Lucky Ladies (pay table B, 6 decks)17.64%The side bet’s pay table

Example: which of two tables costs more? Table A deals 8 decks, the dealer stands on soft 17 and a blackjack pays 3:2. Table B deals 6 decks, the dealer stands on soft 17 and a blackjack pays 6:5. Fewer decks help you a little, but the payout matters far more: table A costs about 0.45% of each bet, table B about 1.79%, so B is about four times as expensive. Each side bet in the table costs more than the main game, so skip them if you want the cheapest play. The table rules apply only as printed on the rules panel: we could not read the rules of the tables in our lobbies without an account, so compare them there.

The table names you will see. The names in a lobby tell you less than the rules panel. Here is what the lobbies we opened from Australia listed on 6 November 2026, and what we know about each name:

VIP or private tables made up 14 to 29 of the live blackjack items in each lobby. A Wizard of Odds page called “Power Blackjack” describes a different game with the same name, so its house edge is not used here.

Live or computer (RNG) blackjack: which is better, and is online harder to win?

With the same rules and payouts the house edge is the same, because it comes from the cards and the payouts, not from whether a person or software deals. That is our conclusion from the arithmetic in the rules table, not a comparison of specific tables, so if you switch between a live and a computer table, read both rules panels. Online is not harder to win by itself; a table that pays 6:5 is, whether live or computer. What does differ is the speed, the bets you can place and whether you share the table.

When to choose which. To pay less per hour at the same bet, choose the slower table: fewer hands an hour means a smaller average loss (see the formula). To check that a table is live, check which studio makes it, because a “Live” tab can also hold computer games. The same blackjack and the same rules apply in both, and our blackjack guide covers the game itself.

What does live blackjack cost an hour, and is A$100 enough?

A small minimum bet does not make a table cheap. What you lose on average in an hour depends on three things you can see or estimate: your bet, the number of hands, and the house edge of the table’s rules.

Average loss per hour = bet per hand × hands per hour × house edge

6 decks, stands on soft 17, pays 6:51.79%A$1.25A$6.27A$12.53

Example: A$10 × 70 hands × 0.43% = A$3.01. One bet per hand, no doubles, splits or side bets, basic strategy. The 70 hands come from a table that Wizard of Odds says an executive of a major Las Vegas Strip casino gave it for land-based tables. If your table deals 35 hands an hour, the cost halves; if it deals more, the cost rises in the same proportion.

Is A$100 enough? At A$5 a hand, A$100 is 20 bets. At the land-based pace of 70 hands an hour, 20 hands take about 17 minutes (20 ÷ 70 × 60). If you lost every one of them, without doubling or splitting, A$100 would be gone in those 17 minutes; that is the fast end, not a forecast, and doubles and splits use your money faster. The average loss of A$1.51 to A$2.24 an hour on a 3:2 table is a long-run average, so it does not mean A$100 lasts for dozens of hours: in a short session your result swings far more than that, up or down, and we have not calculated those swings, so we cannot tell you how long A$100 will last. Whether a table takes a A$5 bet at all is shown on the game icon, according to three casinos’ terms; we could not see it without an account. Note the rules matter more than the stake: A$5 a hand at a 6:5 table (A$6.27 an hour) costs about twice as much as A$10 a hand at a 3:2 table (A$3.01).

Where can you find live blackjack tables from Australia? What the lobbies listed on 6 November 2026

On 6 November 2026 we opened the live section of each casino below from an Australian IP address, without an account, and counted the items with “blackjack” or “21” in the name. An item is one game tile; several tiles from one studio may lead to the same physical table, because we did not open them. The table shows what each lobby listed from Australia that day. It does not show whether a casino will accept you as a customer, or whether the site opens on your home connection. The order is by number of items, not a ranking. Weekly withdrawal limits are from each casino’s terms as published on its site (read 2 November 2026).

Evolution, Pragmatic Play Live, Ezugi and Playtech were missing from the provider lists of the nine lobbies (all but BitStarz) on 6 November 2026, as on our earlier checks of these lobbies on 9 October, 27 October and 5 November 2026. We read the lists without signing in, so we cannot say what an account would show. At BitStarz the same page, loaded from a German address the same day, marked 21 blackjack items available, including 16 from Pragmatic Play Live and 4 from Evolution; from Australia its Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live tables were marked unavailable on 5 and 6 November. The live dealer studio column uses our own list of studios, judged by name; the computer game studios (such as BGaming, Betsoft, Platipus and Nucleus) are also judged by name, without opening the games. All live dealer items listed Australian dollars among their currencies, except at Woo Casino, where 95 of the 121 did. Ignition, Lucky Tiger and Rich Palms were checked on 5 November 2026, not again on 6 November. Not found in our search means we searched the terms for a weekly limit and did not find one; it does not mean there is no limit.

Addresses we checked against ACMA’s list of 5 November 2026: on the list — woocasino.com, playamo.com, casinochan.com, casinonic5.com, rickycasino.com, goldencrowncasino.com, bitstarz.com; not on the list — kingbillywin31.com, dundeeslots1.com, queenspins3.com. A casino can use other addresses too, and an address not on ACMA’s list is not approved by ACMA.

Why another site says Evolution is at 30 of 35 casinos. One comparison site in Google’s Australian results, liveblackjack.co, says “Evolution 30 of 35 casinos” for the casinos on its list, counted “from LCB.org’s casino data”. That is a count from a casino database, not from lobbies opened from Australia, and its list shares six casinos with our table (BitStarz, King Billy, PlayAmo, Ricky Casino, Casinonic and Rich Palms). We can neither confirm nor rule out its figure, and it does not tell you what an Australian visitor will see.

Do live blackjack bets count towards a bonus?

Wagering is the amount you must bet before bonus money can be withdrawn, and the contribution is the share of each bet that counts towards it; how it works in general is in how casino bonuses work. For live blackjack the terms of the casinos we review say one of four things (read 2 November 2026; quotes re-checked 6 November 2026):

A bonus also caps your bet. While a bonus is active, every bet, including a live blackjack hand, must stay at or below the bonus’s maximum bet, given for each casino in the table below. Woo Casino, PlayAmo and CasinoChan apply their cap to “all game types (slots, live games, table games …)” and reserve the right to confiscate the winnings. If you want to bet more a hand, or the table you want starts above the cap, play it without a bonus.

Example. An hour at A$10 a hand and 70 hands is A$700 of bets; at a 5% contribution it would clear A$35 of wagering. With a bonus capped at A$7 or A$8 a bet, though, A$10 a hand breaks the cap. At A$5 a hand the same hour is A$350 of bets and clears A$17.50, but A$5 is still above Golden Crown’s A$3 cap on its second and third deposit bonuses. So live blackjack does not count towards wagering the way pokies usually do, and if you mainly play live tables, a bonus mostly brings rules to follow.

Can you count cards at a live blackjack table?

Counting works only when dealt cards stay out of play until the next shuffle. Some live tables do that: Pragmatic Play describes its Blackjack X as using “Eight decks with no reshuffle until cutting cards at the end of each game”. From Australia, though, BitStarz marked its Blackjack X table unavailable on 6 November 2026. GLI-19 stops the platform from giving players real-time help to track the cards; it does not say anything about counting in your head.

Our view, not a tested result: counting is unlikely to pay at these tables. Eight decks dilute what you learn, the table limits were not visible before sign-up, and we have not read these casinos’ terms on advantage play. Three of them forbid leaving large bets on a blackjack table while a bonus is active (see bonuses). How counting works is explained on our blackjack guide.

Is the “Blackjack Live” app a live dealer game?

No. The app “Blackjack Live ™ Casino 21” by Tapinator, Inc. in Apple’s Australian App Store is free with in-app purchases, and its listing says: “The game does not offer ‘real money gambling’ or an opportunity to win real money or prizes.” It is a social casino game, not a table with a dealer. A free app of the same name is also on Google Play; we did not read that listing.

Safer play

Live tables run hand after hand, and the cost table above is what you should expect to pay on average. Set your limits before you open the lobby:

  • Decide the amount you can afford to lose and the time you will spend, and stop when either runs out.
  • If the site offers deposit, loss or session limits, set them before your first bet.
  • Do not chase losses by raising your stake or moving to a faster table: both raise the cost per hour.

Gambling Help Online offers free, confidential counselling 24 hours a day on 1800 858 858; more contacts are on our gambling help page. BetStop, the national self-exclusion register, covers Australian licensed online and phone wagering services, so it does not block offshore casinos; see our BetStop page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play live dealer blackjack in Australia?

Not on an Australian-licensed site: ACMA says the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 makes it illegal for gambling providers to offer online casinos to people in Australia, and it names blackjack. Live tables reach Australians only from offshore sites. The Act targets providers, not players (our reading, not legal advice), but ACMA says Australian regulators will not be able to help if such a site withholds your winnings.

Is live blackjack real or rigged?

The GLI-19 standard requires a dealer, a real-time video feed and the physical cards to count over the recorded data. That is what the standard requires; we did not check any studio’s certificate. Evolution’s Infinite Blackjack mixes physical and virtual cards, and we did not see it in the lobbies we opened from Australia.

Is live blackjack better than online (RNG) blackjack?

Not for the odds: with the same rules and payouts the house edge is the same (our calculation). A table that pays 6:5 instead of 3:2 adds 1.36 percentage points to the house edge, live or computer, so compare the rules panels.

Is A$100 enough for live blackjack?

At A$5 a hand, A$100 is 20 bets: about 17 minutes at a land-based pace of 70 hands an hour, if you lost every hand without doubling or splitting. The average loss on a 3:2 table, about A$1.51 to A$2.24 an hour (estimate), is a long-run figure and does not mean A$100 lasts for dozens of hours; short sessions swing far more, and we have not calculated how long A$100 lasts.

Do live blackjack bets count towards bonus wagering?

At King Billy and Golden Crown they count 5%, and BitStarz says live games typically count 5%. Woo Casino, PlayAmo and CasinoChan leave live dealer games out of their 5% line and give no rate. Lucky Tiger and Rich Palms may deny winnings if you play live games with the house money (bonus funds, as we read it). Terms read 2 November 2026.

Can I get money back if an online casino is illegal in Australia?

ACMA says Australian regulators will not be able to help if an illegal service withholds your winnings, and that you are unlikely to see your money again. It lists three options: seek independent legal advice, complain to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, or contact the relevant licensing authority, without saying these will recover the money.

Is the Blackjack Live app real money?

No. The App Store listing of “Blackjack Live ™ Casino 21” says the game does not offer real money gambling or a chance to win real money or prizes; it is not a live dealer table.

Sources and how we checked

How we checked the lobbies: on 6 November 2026, between 18:10 and 18:13 UTC, we loaded the live section of each casino from an Australian IP address (Sydney), on a desktop browser profile, without an account and without clicking anything; BitStarz was also loaded from a German address for comparison. Earlier checks of the same lobbies are dated in the text. We did not register, deposit or play.
